Life in the Sixth Form College

Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form is based at The Shooting Field Campus. This site allows students to flourish as independent learners and young adults; there is a lecture theatre, modern Science labs, a Dance and Drama studio, specialist Art, Music, Photography and Product Design rooms along with lots of social and independent study space.

Students can enjoy the spacious common room, large canteen, library and other private study spaces with Wi-Fi connectivity throughout. There is also a dedicated Wellbeing centre with its own gym and space for group sessions such as yoga and mindfulness. The fully equipped gym can be used during non-contact time.

Private Study

All students taking the equivalent of 3 A-level subjects will have around ten hours of private study per week. Students may leave the college site during their non-contact time or take advantage of the extensive study space and other facilities.

Pastoral Support and Progression

All students will have a form tutor and Head of Year to guide them throughout the 2 years of Sixth Form. Each student will have 1 tutor period each fortnight where their form tutor will monitor their academic progress and applications to university, apprenticeships or employment. There is also a Careers adviser who provides students with career and university advice along with practical help such as preparing CVs. For those students who need additional help we have a SEN Learning Support Mentor and a Wellbeing Lead who can help support and signpost students and provide access to counselling services.

Student Responsibilities

Each year the students elect a Student President and Vice-President and other members of the Student Leadership team. The Leadership team is responsible for leading the Sixth Form student body at Steyning Grammar School and representing the views of all students to the teachers and leadership team of the school. The Student Leadership Team is also responsible for arranging the many charity and fundraising events that take place throughout the year, helping to foster and promote a sense of community within the college.

Additional responsibilities include the Wellbeing reps and being a member of the school’s Eco Council. We also offer the opportunity to be trained as Peer Listeners.

Sixth Form College Agreement

This is an agreement for all concerned, students, parents or carers and the college, to ensure that the learning environment will be as good as it can be for our students to achieve their best.

What I have loved about my three years so far at SGS are the brilliant resources and facilities. For example, I really enjoy the library at shooting field, which has a range of books and ebooks (which I can read on my iPad at home and at school).
