Curriculum Offer

The Sixth Form College teaching team are experienced and use their expert knowledge to inspire young minds in a relaxed but purposeful environment.  Varied teaching approaches are used such as small group seminars, demonstrations, practical activities, e-learning based research, group debate and presentations.

Years of experience have taught us that the best results are achieved when students have the opportunity to develop independent  learning skills that are required to be successful at Key Stage 5 and beyond. We aim to foster confidence and independence when approaching tasks and set high expectations.

We are a happy, challenging, supportive Sixth Form College which encourages students to use their initiative, be inquisitive, responsible learners and develop a love for learning that help them be successful in all aspects of their lives.

Choosing Your Courses

There will be many factors that will influence your choice of courses.  These will include your expected achievements at GCSE or equivalent qualifications, any progression plans you may have and your own interests. You should take as much advice as you can from subject teachers, your form tutor and careers staff at school.  Discuss everything with your parents, carers or Boarding House Parents. Talk to Sixth Form College staff at parents’ evenings and our open evening in October.

Qualifications

Most students follow three A-level or Advanced Qualifications (BTECs or Cambridge Technicals) throughout their two years at the College.

Students may choose to also follow the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or Core Maths to enhance their learning programme.

Some students may need to take Maths or English GCSE resits or follow a Functional Skills Qualification in Maths or English instead. We also offer additional learning hours and enrichment opportunities through the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Qualification and the Football Academy based at Steyning.

For further details please see our course directory.

Learning Styles

Each course is taught and assessed in a particular way and the styles of learning are very different.  It is worth exploring how you learn best and what skills you are bringing to Sixth Form College courses. A-levels are mainly assessed through terminal exams at the end of the 2 years, Applied Qualifications are assessed through a mixture of external exams throughout the two years and internally assessed coursework.

What I have loved about my three years so far at SGS are the brilliant resources and facilities. For example, I really enjoy the library at shooting field, which has a range of books and ebooks (which I can read on my iPad at home and at school).
