Health and Wellbeing Lead

Mrs Charlotte Willard

With over a decade of experience in healthcare, I began my career in physical health, working in a private hospital setting where I supported both in theatre and on the hospital inpatient wards. Eight years ago, I transitioned into the mental health sector, where I discovered a profound passion for supporting individuals with complex mental health needs. My roles have spanned psychiatric hospitals, community-based mental health services, a high-security prison, and GP surgeries – each deepening my understanding of mental health care and reinforcing my commitment to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Since entering the mental health field, I have been a dedicated advocate for those I support, guiding and empowering them through compassionate, person-centred care. I strive to ensure that every interaction is an opportunity to improve well-being, restore dignity, and build trust.

I am proud to be taking the next step in my career and working as part of the pastoral care team at Steyning Grammar School, providing care and support to boarding students. I work closely with Houseparents and the Welfare Officers to ensure students’ physical, emotional, and mental health needs are met in a holistic and child-centred way. I run a twice daily health clinic, coordinate personalised care for unwell students, and lead the school’s well-being programme, promoting self-care and healthy lifestyle choices. I maintain communication with parents and carers to ensure consistency of care and support is in place.

My approach is always rooted in empathy, respect, and a strong belief in the importance of integrated health support – especially in young people. I am proud to contribute to environments where individuals feel safe, heard, and empowered to thrive.

What I have loved about my three years so far at SGS are the brilliant resources and facilities. For example, I really enjoy the library at shooting field, which has a range of books and ebooks (which I can read on my iPad at home and at school).
