Super and Co-Curricular

At Steyning, we pride ourselves on the number of super and co-curricular opportunities that are available to our Sixth form students.

Super-curricular activities are those that take the subjects you study further, beyond what you have learnt in lessons. You may go into more depth on something you picked up in the classroom or learn about a new topic altogether. We run many day and residential trips such as those to Bletchley Park, Poland and CERN in Switzerland as well as the Chemistry and Biology Olympiads and STEP programme in Maths. For those students wishing to continue with their Science studies at University we run an Aspirant Scientist group each fortnight which helps prepare students for university level Science and Medicine with preparation for BMAT and UCAT exams. We also help with support for the LNAT exam for any students wishing to take Law at degree level.

We strongly encourage all students to participate in extracurricular and enrichment activities. These include Charity Fundraising Events, Community Volunteering, Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Work Experience and Sport. There are many student led groups such as the LGBTQ+ group and the Debating Society as well as a Book and Film Club.

The timetable is largely free on Wednesday afternoons to accommodate regular sports fixtures and we have our own Sixth Form Football, Rugby and Netball teams.  The Sports Centre in Steyning is also available for your use on Wednesday afternoon including the Fitness Suite and swimming pool.

Work Experience

All students have the opportunity to go out on work experience for up to a week during Year 12.

This provides a test of your future career choice, you will gain interview experience and build your confidence.  Your employers will complete a report which contributes to your reference.  Successful work experience can lead to offers of employment, further education and interesting summer vacation work.

What I have loved about my three years so far at SGS are the brilliant resources and facilities. For example, I really enjoy the library at shooting field, which has a range of books and ebooks (which I can read on my iPad at home and at school).
