Meet the Leadership Team

Mr A Timmons
(Headteacher)

I studied Fine Art at Central St Martins before specialising in Sculpture for my degree at the Kent Institute of Art & Design. I completed a PGCE in Art & Design at Brighton University before taking up my first teaching post at Peacehaven Community school where I stayed for 8 years, becoming heavily involved in curriculum development and staff training. During this period I completed a Masters in Education from the University of Sussex before moving to the Peterfield School in Hampshire. Whilst at The Petersfield School I held the positions of Assistant Head, Deputy Head before becoming Head of School in 2019. After thirteen years at TPS in which time the school has now been recognised as Outstanding by Ofsted, I was delighted to join Steyning Grammar School as Head of School in 2023 and now, Headteacher of Steyning Grammar School as of February 2025.

I read English Literature and Drama at Roehampton University, London before completing my PGCE at Sussex University. I started teaching at Worthing High School in 1999 and then took up the post of Head of English and Drama at Peacehaven Community School where I stayed for 10 years. I joined Steyning Grammar School in 2012 as an Assistant Headteacher leading on CPD. I was promoted to Deputy Headteacher Students in 2015 and I was Co-Headteacher from September 2019 – March 2022. I completed my Masters degree in Education in 2012 with the University of Sussex. I am now the Senior Deputy Headteacher at SGS.

Mr A Wood

I read Maths and Physics at Exeter University and then went on to train to be a teacher at Bath University. I started teaching Maths and Science in Emmbrook School, Wokingham, Berkshire.  Three years later I began as Head of Physics at Imberhorne School in East Grinstead where I also became involved in staff training. After six years I moved to Steyning Grammar School as Head of Science.  In 2016 I was promoted to Assistant Headteacher and went on to become a Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for KS4 and Curriculum in September 2019.

Mrs V Chalcraft
(Assistant Headteacher – Rock Road)

In my twenties I studied Applied Biology at the University of Brighton and then went on to take management positions in industry.  After having my two children I decided upon a career change, returning to the University of Brighton to undertake an honours degree in Secondary Science Education with QTS and specialising in Chemistry. I took up my first position as a Science Teacher at Chailey School where I went on to be promoted to STEM Coordinator and then spent six years as Head of Science.  While at Chailey School I also represented the staff on the Board of Governors. I have recently completed a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management in Education and joined Steyning Grammar School as Assistant Headteacher for Rock Road in September 2022.

I am from the West of Ireland where I studied Business Management before gaining a CELTA qualification. In 2010 I completed a PGCE at St. Mary’s University Twickenham and took a post at Bellerbys College Brighton. I worked there for 11 years and was promoted several times from teaching to leadership posts as Head of Middle School, Head of Sixth Form and Academic Director respectively. I have developed whole school PSHE programmes, delivered teacher and tutor training and worked in the local community as a Safeguarding governor. I am currently working towards my MA Education. Prior to joining the team here I worked at DLD College London where I held the post of Assistant Principal Academic. I joined Steyning Grammar School as Assistant Headteacher for The Towers in September 2022.

What I have loved about my three years so far at SGS are the brilliant resources and facilities. For example, I really enjoy the library at shooting field, which has a range of books and ebooks (which I can read on my iPad at home and at school).
