Summer Explorers 2021

Summer Explorers @ SGS 2021

Steyning Grammar School organised a spectacular Summer School for 388 prospective Year 6 students and 50 Year 7 students between 26 to 30 July 2021.

The Summer school was funded by the government summer school fund to help students who may have any loss of learning due to Covid over the last 18 months. Students were able to participate for the whole week, for free, enabling them to meet new people and learn new skills.

Summer Explorers has offered a range of activities from Photography, Tie dye t-shirts, Forest school and Sphero sports coding to Drama, Poetry, Baking, and STEM activities. The week also promoted team building sports and 4G Football as well as key ECO messages to help sustain and promote a better planet. Literacy and Numeracy has also been a key part of the summer school camp with students completing a daily journal and key skills through the activities planned.

Cheryse Shephard, Extended Leadership Team Steyning Grammar School, organised the week and said “This has been an amazing week – it has been a challenge to organise such a huge project in Covid times but at Steyning Grammar School we believe that Summer Explorers was imperative for the well-being of our prospective and current students. The aim of the week was for all students to Enjoy, Respect and Achieve, in order for our students to become ‘Gamechangers’ and make a difference in life. We wanted to give all our students the opportunity to flourish and to give them better life chances. Covid will not beat us – the students have made wonderful lasting friendships, have had the most fun and flourished this week. It is clear that Summer School has improved the wellbeing and happiness of the students that were able to attend. I’m very proud of all students and student leaders’.

SGS had a total of 408 people involved with summer school from the catering team who provided hot/cold food for all,the admin team who ensured no child was left behind and teachers and adults, leading and supervising a huge range of sessions. SGS also invited a group of current students, as part of their student leadership team, who gained key leadership skills by supporting their groups throughout the week. And if that wasn’t enough, SGS ran a virtual summer school online for those students who were unable to attend in person.

SGS Summer Explorers has been a massive success!
