At Steyning Grammar School we intend to deliver a rich and challenging Mathematics curriculum that encourages an enjoyment of the subjects, and enables students to recognise the value of Mathematics and the skills associated with it. We want every student to find every lesson both engaging and challenging. Our approach is that all students can achieve and progress within our subject, and we aim for students to leave SGS with a strong mathematical understanding and a positive attitude towards the subject . The fundamentals of our curriculum are underpinned by four key principles:
Fluency – we aim to develop fluent mathematicians, who are able to recall and apply their knowledge to a variety of problems. This is underpinned by a strong foundation built upon from KS2, with an initial focus on the fundamental Numeracy skills in KS3, and embedded through continuous practice across their school career developing their grit.
Reasoning – our students are able to reason mathematically, and make connections between different areas of mathematics, developing their curiosity in the process. The introduction of increasingly complex problems over time enables students to develop a conceptual understanding.
Mathematical communication – students are able to communicate both ideas and solutions. They are able to use mathematical vocabulary in the relevant situations and can communicate ideas through extended methods and working. The Numeracy skills developed throughout their school career are continually used and extended.
Problem solving – from the start of KS3, students are exposed to and able to approach both routine and non-routine problem solving questions. Approaches to problems are developed, including the ability to break down longer problems into isolated smaller calculations, and recognising the application of multiple areas of Mathematics. We encourage our students to show creativity in their approaches to problem solving.
A ‘game-changing’ student in Maths is:
A student who demonstrates inquiry, explores independently the mathematical concepts being taught and makes sound logical steps when problem solving. Game changers in Maths have an innate drive to explore the mathematical world around them and see how it connects, influences and supports other disciplines. Maths game changers demonstrate their passion for the subject in and outside the classroom, reviewing and reflecting on ideas that turn into hypotheses to help us understand the world. Maths game changers are always curious.
