Through reading a broad range of texts we aim to ensure that students can interact with the world around them and build ‘cultural capital’.
We encourage students to question their own ideas and those of others; to recognise when they are being manipulated and to be able to use language to present their ideas with confidence.
Students should develop reading, writing and speaking skills so that they can understand the world around them and be understood by others.
A ‘game-changing’ student in English is:
A student who reads around the text making links between ideas discussed in English and the relevance of other subjects. A student who can craft language to create a specific effect on the audience. A student who interacts with the media, literature and non-fiction to explore society and in turn convey their opinions.
