Collective Worship

Collective Worship is at the heart of life at Steyning Grammar School. As a Church of England school, we believe it provides a valuable opportunity for students and staff to gather as a community, reflect on life’s big questions, engage with the Christian faith, and consider what it means to live well.

Our Collective Worship programme is rooted in the school’s vision:

“To live life in all its fullness and flourish as God intended.” 

(John 10:10)

Through worship, scripture, prayer, music, reflection, and teaching, we seek to help students explore questions of identity, purpose, character, relationships, meaning, and hope.

The programme follows a carefully planned curriculum which draws on:

• The life and teachings of Jesus
• The Bible and the Christian story
• Prayer and worship
• Christian values and discipleship
• The Ten Commandments and living well
• Social action, justice, and service
• The Fruit of the Holy Spirit and character formation
• Key Christian festivals and seasons

Collective Worship follows a simple pattern of gathering, engaging, responding, and being sent out into daily life. Students are invited to listen, reflect, and participate respectfully while remaining free to engage according to their own beliefs and convictions.

Collective Worship in Practice

Collective Worship also takes place through:

• Regular year-group and key-stage gatherings
• Tutor-time reflection and Prayer for the Week
• Scripture engagement within Religious Education
• Christmas, Easter, Welcome and Leavers’ Services
• Christian Union and Bible study groups
• Opportunities for prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth
• Contributions from the Chaplaincy Team, school leaders, staff, students, and visiting speakers

Through Collective Worship, we aim to help students develop wisdom, character, compassion, resilience, and a deeper understanding of the Christian faith that underpins the life of the school.
