Religious Education

• SGS follows an adapted trust curriculum which is based on Hampshire’s LAS, built around deep conceptual enquiry  – exploring concepts integral to religious faith and tradition in the world today
• SGS and BET adhere to OFSTED’s subject evidence review guidance which emphasises depth over breadth of study.  Students study two Abrahamic faiths (including depth studies of two Christian denominational traditions) and one Dharmic tradition in greater depth, where at least 60% of curriculum is focused on Christianity. Christian identity also runs as a core strand through other components.
• All students to GCSE short-course as a minimum and many opt for full course; the number of students studying full-course is increasing year-on-year.
• The A Level Philosophy, Ethics and Beliefs (OCR) is on our curriculum offer for Key Stage 5 with a third of the courses based on the developments of Chrstian thought. 
• At Key Stage 5, all students have a minimum of 20 hours per year for core RE delivered via the Next Steps Programme and the Beliefs Conference. 

The importance that the School places on Religious Education is demonstrated by the fact that all students follow the half course GCSE course in RE with the option of the full course at GCSE. 

● KS3 Programmes of Study promote the Christian character of the school through the following units: Y7 Creation, Y7 Christian Beliefs, and Y7 Gamechangers, Y8 Gospel and Y8 Salvation.

 ● At GCSE the course, Christianity is the chosen religion of study where students apply their knowledge and understanding to both moral and religious philosophical issues. 

● Religious Studies A Level continues to be on our curriculum offer with a third of the course focused on developments of Christian thought. 

● The annual Sixth Form College Beliefs Conference is organised by the College Leadership Team in conjunction with the School Chaplain.There is always a representative from Christianity on the panel. Other panel members have represented Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, atheism as well as Christian denominations such as Anglican, Pentecostal and Quaker.
