Christian Vision and Values

Founded in 1614, Steyning Grammar School is proud to be a Church of England school serving students and staff of all faiths and none. As part of Bohunt Education Trust, our Christian foundation continues to shape the life of our community through a vision rooted in the words of Jesus:

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)

Our vision, and school motto, is to enable every member of our community to ‘live life in all its fullness and flourish as God intended’. This vision underpins every aspect of school life: academic achievement, pastoral care, wellbeing, character development, service, and relationships.

We seek to be a welcoming and aspirational community where every individual is known, valued, and encouraged to fulfil their potential. Inspired by the Christian faith, we promote respect, compassion, integrity, courage, forgiveness, and service, recognising the dignity and worth of every person and celebrating the richness of our school community.

Our Christian ethos is expressed through a vibrant chaplaincy programme of collective worship, reflection, prayer, pastoral care, and spiritual development. Across our four sites, students are offered regular opportunities to explore life’s big questions, engage with faith and values, and reflect on what it means to live well in today’s world.

Chaplaincy plays a central role in supporting the spiritual and pastoral life of the school. Through collective worship, Christian Unions, Prayer Zones, mentoring, prayer, discussion groups, Alpha courses, and partnerships with local churches, we seek to create spaces where students and staff can encounter hope, belonging, purpose, and meaning.

Alongside our Christian vision, we are committed to developing character and helping students grow into thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible young people who can make a positive difference in their communities and the wider world.

At Steyning Grammar School, our Christian foundation is not simply part of our history; it continues to shape who we are today as we seek to help every member of our community flourish.

What I have loved about my three years so far at SGS are the brilliant resources and facilities. For example, I really enjoy the library at shooting field, which has a range of books and ebooks (which I can read on my iPad at home and at school).
